The joint ministerial decision on mandatory vehicle insurance against natural disasters has been published in the Government Gazette. Below you can see what the obligation requires and the consequences of not meeting it.
Implementation of article 5A of Law 5116/2024 (A’ 100).
The insurance obligation in par. 1 of article 5A of Law 5116/2024 (A’ 100), for the owner or keeper of a motor vehicle within the meaning of case a) of article 1 of Presidential Decree 237/1986 (A’ 110), normally parked in Greece, starts on 1 June 2025, regardless of whether the vehicle is covered by other compulsory or optional insurance. The owner or keeper of a motor vehicle that has been taken off the road, under article 22 of Law 2367/1953 (A’ 82), must insure it only against forest fire and flood, at its current market value.
Article 2
Exemptions from the insurance obligation. In addition to the exemption already set out in par. 2 of article 5A of Law 5116/2024 (A’ 100), the insurance obligation in par. 1 of that article does not apply to trucks or to commercial vehicles owned by businesses with annual gross revenue above five hundred thousand (500,000) euros in the previous tax year, provided that they are insured under article 5 of Law 5116/2024 for 100% of their current market value and that this value is included in the 70% of the value of the business’s insured assets, as set out in par. 2 of article 5.
Article 3
Current market value of the vehicle. To calculate the current market value of motor vehicles, the vehicle’s chassis number may also be used, as published in the public digital service “Open data for vehicles”.
Article 4
Consequences of not meeting the obligation. From 1.6.2025 onwards, an owner or keeper who has not taken out the mandatory insurance under par. 1 of article 5A of Law 5116/2024 is excluded from any state disaster-relief grant if a forest fire or flood occurs.
Article 5
Entry into force
